The Yellow Pinto Author B. WalterWil in San Diego for Del Mar Racing Season
Author B. WalterWill, currently touring in support of his debut memoir The Yellow Pinto, will be in San Diego, California July 25-28 to take part in this year’s Del Mar Racing season.
This visit marks the beginning of B. WalterWill’s extended stay in the San Diego area, where he will be making promotional visits to local bookstores, libraries and cultural centers to discuss his work and share insights into the deeper understanding of the inspiration behind his novel.
B. WalterWill reflects on a particular occasion: “True story. I had every intention of going to and finishing grad school on one particular day when I was younger. My car broke down on the freeway, nothing’s worse. Walking alongside the freeway I put my thumb out. A guy pulled over in a Yellow Pinto. I asked, ‘Where you are going?’. He said, ‘The casino’. I said, ‘Take me there!’
“We stopped at the gas station and I popped a few bucks in the car for gas and grabbed a few 40 ounce of good old malt liquor from the store and took them away in brown paper bags. By the time we got to the casino, I was down to my last $36. We went straight to the Sports Book. The first horse race comes and I bet on a horse with 30-1 odds, a total longshot. The longshot won, and within minutes of choosing to get in that Yellow Pinto, I had close to a thousand dollars in my pocket.
“Sequential Pick 6 began the next horse race. This means you have to pick the winner for 6 races in a row. I love betting on a Pick 6, although the odds may not typically be in favor. By betting a combination of the 6 winning horses, I hit the Pick 6 and turned my bet 2 1/2 hours later into $76K. I went and found the guy who gave me the ride in the Yellow Pinto. We slang back a couple of shots of top-shelf tequila. I gave him $5,000 cash as a thank you and decided I was done with school.
“One of the worst beats in the history of my horse racing experience was within a Pick 6 sequence where the pool was over a million dollars. I realized I was the lone ticket and the only one alive to potentially hit the Pick 6. And away they go! The final race of the Pick 6 sequence had started. The horse, my horse that I selected to win this race, is at least 5 lengths clear in the middle of the stretch and is only about 20 yards from the finish.
“Out of the clear blue sky, a bird collides with the horse. Of course, the horse spooks and unfortunately bunny hops, knocking the jockey off the horse with maybe only 20 more yards before the finish line, thus within seconds ending my chance at the million dollars. My ticket quickly dissolved to be worth less than 2 dead flies. Let’s just say it was the beginning of the bad losing streak.”
