HDY: How to keep hair hydrated for summer?

    Peter Lamas:

The summer sun can definitely zap hair of vital moisture. Here are a few tips to help keep hair hydrated:

    – Use a clarifying shampoo and conditioner – like the Peter Lamas Wheatgrass Purifying System – once a week to keep build up at bay. Also, apply a deep conditioning hair mask to locks once a week to keep your mane moisturized.

    – Rinse hair with filtered water after swimming in a pool or the ocean to help remove chlorine, saltwater or debris that may be stuck in hair.

    – Wear a hat to limit sun exposure to your hair and scalp.

HDY: Why is organic hair care more beneficial, especially in warm months?

    Peter Lamas:

People tend to wash their hair more in the summer because of outdoor activities and the heat however; harsh detergents in some shampoos do more than clean your hair. Sulfates can over dry hair, especially during the summer when combined with the heat and sun. Avoid shampoos containing sulfates, wash only as needed, and rinse with cool water to help protect your hair color during the summer.

HDY: How much sun is too much sun for hair?

    Peter Lamas:

Treat your hair like you would your skin! Use an SPF to help reduce UV damage to your locks. Simply dilute 2 teaspoons of an SPF 25 sunscreen down with one cup of water. Fill a spray bottle with the mixture and spritz the product into damp hair before styling! Voila! Homemade sunscreen for your hair! For additional protection, you can mist the solution on throughout the day.

HDY: Is it safe to constantly put heat on your hair, even during hot months? What Peter Lamas products are there to combat dry hair?

    Peter Lamas:

Give the heat styling tools a rest during the summer! Opt to air dry your hair instead and use a light styling cream like the Chinese Herbs Revitalizing Styling Cream to help keep frizz to a minimum and show off your natural hair texture.

Getting the right haircut to handle humid weather will also keep your mane looking great throughout the warm months. Add layers to curly hair to keep locks from puffing out at the bottom and creating that pyramid shape. For straight hair, you want a little extra weight at the bottom to keep hair from expanding in the humidity, so avoid cuts that are too choppy or over texturized. Apply a leave-in conditioner throughout the day – like the Repair Me Detangling Mist – to give your lock a hydrating boost.

What are some quick, easy general hair care tips for styling during the summer?

    Peter Lamas:

The hot summer months are a perfect time to let your hair down! Use a light styling cream to help enhance natural hair texture and reduce frizz.

Low-maintenance hairstyles like a pretty ballerina bun or a fishtail braid are also perfect to help keep hair out of your face. A light spritz of Hold Me Thermal Styling Spray before styling will help keep hair in place.

Keep your hair color vibrant during the summer months by limiting your hair’s exposure to the sun. You can also purchase color-saving products that are formulated to help keep your hue bright.

Because summer is rougher on hair than other seasons, it is more important to get your hair trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks. The ends of hair become weak from color treatments, processing, sun, and chemicals causing them to split and fray. Bump up your normal haircut schedule in the summer to keep hair looking and feeling healthy.

The diluted sunscreen in a squirt bottle is something I’m definitely going to add to my summer haircare routine to keep my hair as healthy as possible in the California sun!
