    Doritos Guru

This is a great example of why you will always lose by waiting. I seen this bag a few weeks ago in stores and thought of a great concept for it. But I snoozed so I lose? By the time I decided to go to DoritosGuru.ca (today) the contest submissions have already closed. Boo. But I will tell you my idea anyway. The prize is $25,000 and 1% of all the sales for a year. And bragging rights and probably a lot of Doritos X.

But before I start this is my favorite out of the Top 5.

I would name this the Dorito Piqué! (Spicy in spanish)
I’m all about the word play!
It opens with a person at a white board that says ‘Productivity Improvement and Quality Enhancement’ as an acronym.
Then a group of Chinese teenagers messing around after drinking, laughing, goofing around someone trips and another person yells out PK! (In Cantonese swearing, means “pouk gai” which is tripping on a street)
Then it cuts of a ballet studio where the class is doing piques (pick up pick up)
Then it goes to a kid crunching the chip, saying Pique! and then the mom correcting him saying Picante!

    LOL… anyway. That’s what I would have done 🙂

    Daddy, what’s up?

There is a reason men are stronger than women, less emotionally driven and more logical. There is a reason for this. There are certain decisions and things that come easily to men that are much more challenging for women. Women are strong because they have to be. Women have to be self sufficient because they are forced to be, not because they want to be. Never in my life have I felt not growing up with my dad around mattered, until now. I am going to talk about this ‘take-charge’ guy who, maybe, should have been in my life all long.

Protect. Men are suppose to defend women in situations and especially from themselves. As a girl growing up, I would never care about the boys bullying me or teasing me, because to my ‘take-charge’ guy, I would always be the most beautiful and precious girl. With such an affirmation, any childish words or playground banters would roll off me like rain on latex. Instead, I learned to defend myself, establish the right way to see myself, my body image, my everything. I knew who I was because I had to. When it came to dating, my ‘take-charge’ man would make sure the boy who wanted to date me was ‘good enough’. He would make sure he had me home on time, respected me and didn’t talk to me the way music taught them, or expect me to act like girls in movies they have seen. Instead, I learned through experience and had to sift the trash from the treasure through heartbreak, tears and that ‘i just got kicked in the stomach feeling’. My take-charge guy was the difference between “butterflies in my stomach” before a date and “razor blades if you f*$% with me” attitude. My ‘take-charge’ guy protects me from other men. And now I do, probably so much so that the ‘good’ guys find me complicated.

Balance. Men are suppose to use their logical sense to make great decisions for us both. My ‘take-charge’ man knows that I am steered by my emotions and therefore balances me out by making logical decisions for us. Instead, men use this ability to take advantage – take what they need and then leave. Or manipulate the situation where I am not even sure what I am entitled to when bargaining. My ‘take-charge’ man would know this about me and let me know what’s up, think about and know what motivates and affects me. Growing up without this, I am skewed. I make decisions based on 3/4 emotions and 1/4 logic. My ‘take-charge’ man not being around sort of has me off kilter – but how would I know that, when it has always been like this? I asked this guy advice about auto insurance and he told me to stop acting helpless. He is right, how dare I expect anything when I am clearly self sufficient.

What does it to feel like to know that no one has your back except yourself? No one is going to stick up for you even if you are right, never mind when you are wrong. What does it feel like when it’s you against the world and trust and mistrust is emotional currency of the day? One day, maybe a day just like today you run out, look back and wonder: Daddy, what’s up? How am I suppose to recognize a ‘take-charge’ man when I never had one around? I wonder if you looked at me and thought, she’ll figure it out, and let me do just that. Damn right I will, but only because I have to.

    Ryerson – Mass Exodus

I attended the Ryerson University Fashion Week that showcased the collections of their grads. There were over 30 sets shown and a few really stood out to me based on wear-ability, colors and movement. To me, some designers design clothing for their own self expression while others truly want to create a lucrative business by offering beautiful pieces that are ready-to-wear.

Through her innovative luxury brand with a sense of daring and provocation that resonates with celebrity and accomplished elite, Iva has offered her target customers chic and sleep outfits appropriate for a celebrity lifestyle.”

The movement of the dress on the left was incredible!

    Enclosure
She describes her style as luxury streetwear”, the collection is a creative exploration mainly inspired by portable shelter. Exaggerated shapes with a controlled distribution of volume.

On the right, this jumpsuit/playsuit is backless. So SUPER hot, definitely one of the strongest pieces of the entire show.

    Havergal Career Circuit

I graduated from Havergal College in 2001 and have been actively involved with many of the alumuni events. Seeing that I am not able to financially donate to the school’s developments, I make extra efforts to give my time and experience to enrich those who are up and coming.

    Me with Gr 10’s & Gr 11’s

Going back to the school made me realize how far I have come in the last 8 years; and also how much have remained the same.  Havergal’s motto is “Preparing young women to make a difference”. I think they did a good job with me at least!  If you want more information about the top girl’s school in Toronto check out www.havergal.on.ca.

Terry Sawh, president of Top Notch Employment Services (Havergal parent)

I was invited to be a part of the inaugural Havergal Career Circuit today. It is similiar to a ‘speed-dating’ format but for Old Girls (graduates), parents and other industry leaders to provide mentorship for Gr 10’s & 11’s about univeristy, careers, life and such.  Some of the questions we were asked to prepare to answer were:

    Describe your current career.
Are there any required qualifications/degrees/certificates/training for this job?
What was your journey to get there?
What are some pros and cons to the job?
    What are some related careers?
Do you have advice for someone wanting to explore this choice?

We each had 15 mins to talk to 4-5 girls, then they rotated to the next table.  My advice for the girls was to be truly passionate about your craft, volunteer as much as you can and make use of summers and exchange programs to travel and expand your horizons.  Life does not end at University and 16 years out of 100 is really just 16% of your life lived.  There is still so much coming! The girls were excited when I told them I threw the Sex and the City party, Shopaholic cocktail and a party for Toronto Fashion Week.  I mean I am not a doctor or a fancy millionaire (yet!) but I am doing something I truly love and that in itself is quite inspiring.  It reminds me of what I wrote in my grad yearbook.  “…I won’t leave a legacy and I won’t leave with a prize. I will live my fantasy, and I won’t tell you lies”

    Yours truly

The host of this event was Toronto millionaire Robert Herjavec – the host of CBC’s Dragon’s Den and a Havergal parent.  It might be difficult for some of you to imagine this: 10 years ago, a struggling entrepreneur who waited tables concocting his masterplan TODAY purchasing the most expensive house ever sold in Canada in Bridle Path. Herjavec’s success was in creating the first ‘firewall’ and selling it for over $100 million. Then having Dragon’s Den picked up by ABC prime time and hosting a Hugo Boss fashion show fundraiser – in his backyard (50,000 sq ft house). WOW.

Robert Herjavec (Millionaire + Havergal parent)

Herjavec told us briefly about  jetting to Miami for a weekend and living the good life – all in an incredibly humble way. He immigrated to Canada from Croatia as a child and had humble beginnings and talks about how much things can change in 10 years. He was inspiring and affirmed with many of us already knew – success comes from hard work and the world is won by those who are adaptable to change.  It always feels amazing to be in the company of those who inspire and have truly achieved success.  The funny thing is, he was not flashy or emblazoned with brand names. He was just a father speaking at his daughter’s school about the path that lies before them.

    How cool is that?
