R.I.P. Steve Jobs

And I remain extremely concerned when I see what’s happening in our country, which is in many ways the luckiest place in the world. We don’t seem to be excited about making our country a better place for our kids.”

Don’t settle. Steve Jobs digitialized music. He changed the music industry forever. He was a buddhist, a music fiend, and a humanitarian. He was 56, a college drop out, with a passion for minimal design. He was survived by his wife and immediate family. He died peacefully but with complications from his pancreatic cancer.

Manifesto LOVE
On Sunday, hundreds of people including myself were treated to many hours of live entertainment and other awesome activites during Manifesto’s all day “super” block-party. The weather was so nice, and the good vibes were definitely floating around as we watched Dundas Square transform into a multidisciplinary urban arts playground; featuring live performances by some of Canada’s musical legends, emerging talent, not to mention the handful of international guests. There were also tonnes of vendors, a bboy/bgirl open dance floor, lots of good food, workshops, and so much more! If you weren’t there, you totally missed out. I was bummed that I missed the First Look Cypher (heard it was awesome), but I’m glad I was able to catch the rest of the performances, cause they were dope!
Watching these artists turn plain new era snap-backs into works of art was awesome!

Country-Cutie Taylor Swift
I’m not a huge fan of country music but I’ve always liked Taylor Swift’s music. I’m not here to talk about her music though. I came across a freebie for her new fragrance, “Wonderstruck”. What stars out there don’t just stick to one element? Singers sing and have their own fragrance line. Actresses act and have their own clothing line. A lot of athletes have their own line of something too!
So, “Wonderstruck” is Swift’s first fragrance and she partnered with Elizabeth Arden for this. It is available online but if you want a sample (hurry, before they run out) of it first then check out her Facebook page! It should be in stores in October (US).
Swift’s collection includes the spray, a rollerball, lotion, and bath gel! The scent is “a charming and sparkling surprise of vibrant fruits, kissed by a bouquet of soft petals and a touch of sweet indulgence.”
I look forward to getting my free sample! I already love the color purple…

Vashtie Kola was born and raised in Albany, NY to Trinidadian immigrant parents, and now resides in New York City. She is a success, known for as an Artist, a Creative Director, Music Video Director, and Party Promoter. Her nickname is “Downtown Sweetheart” and that she definitely is. A question to ask her is what doesn’t she do? She has directed music videos for artists such as Kid Cudi, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, and more. If that isn’t enough Vashtie also owns a clothing line, Violette.
As a director, a designer, and a party promoter, Vashtie pursued all her dreams and doesn’t just stop there. She believes in those who aren’t afraid of showing how they truly feel. Her type of environment is where everyone is welcome. No barriers. Do you, be you, come together, and have fun!
Violette, her own line, is a mix of everything you can think of from hip-hop and rock and casual and couture, for example. It debuted in Fall 2008 and has gone global in countries such as in France and Japan!

Erykah Badu and Adrian Younge Tear Up the Stage in NYC
Last night Yvonne and I attended the Wax Poetics Records Showcase presented by Skullcandy, a monthly showcase teaming renowned DJs and Wax Poetics recording artists. Last night’s show, held at Le Poisson Rouge, featured one of my favorite artists of all times, Erykah Badu aka DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown, and Adrian Younge and his new band, Venice Dawn. Clearly Erykah and Adrian have tons of fans in NYC because at 10:30pm, 30 minutes before the doors opened, the line was 3 people wide all the way around the block–wow!
The show kicked off with local DJs warming up the room….
Then came Adrian Younge and Venice Dawn. And wow, they blew me away! Their energy was crazy. They jumped on stage with their grey retro suits and killed it with a fierce performance from beginning to end. Their style is an eclectic fusion of psychedelic soul, rock, and funk, utilizing a variety of instruments from the flute to a keyboard called a Selene! The band will release a new album, Something About April, this fall through Wax Poetics Records and I can’t wait for it!

For the finale, Erykah Badu appeared as her alter ego, Lo Down Loretta Brown, tearing up the 1s and 2s. I would have loved to hear that voice of hers, but it was cool seeing her do her DJ thing!
