If you want to be inspired by Toronto’s own ‘Brand Architect’ – he’s your dude.

I took this from his Facebook: About me….hmm…man…I’m just that dude…passionate as hell about my friends, my family, and my goals. I give a large amount of credit to my parents who knew to raise me with the kind of mental toughness I would need in order to make something of myself in this uneven world we live in. It’s almost like feeling as if I have this protective shield around me that keeps me strong against, evil doers, haters, backbiters etc. If you know me, you know I’m driven, driven as hell…A busy dude, always working on new ideas, trying to carve out a niche for myself. At the end of the day I’m about connecting with like minded individuals – people that are about something, people that want to advance themselves and their careers. It’s all about the laws of attraction – I’m a firm believer that if we all profess and put forth the vibes and feelings of what we want to achieve, we will, no doubt, end up connecting with those that can help us manifest and achieve those things. Guess that’s why you’ll always see me articulating and marketing the things and people I associate with.

    In the Biz: Lori Taylor

FiDM  is amazing because of all the cool opportunities we get to meet industry gurus, ask questions and get inspire.  In my Tuesday class, our instructor Jeanne Tamayo invited Smashbox’s Lori Taylor to speak with us. She is a powerhouse. Let me tell you. With patent over the knee boots, chic boyfriend blazer with leather details, her mini Smashbox kit, clear lens gold aviators and matte red lipstick…. loves it.

    Lori inspires me

Starting at a counter, loving the biz, self taught and passionate, Lori is now the Pro Artist relations manager at Smashbox – aka – her dream job.  She never calls in sick because she loves what she does. And she is off to Hawaii this week, business trip!

    Found this over at BeautyBlitz.com

Lori says the best gift you can give someone is the gift of confidence. Make someone beautiful…I even stayed after class to tell her about using weave glue for lashes I heard over at 2BD. We were so fortunate to look through her portfolio and watch her demo on one lucky beauty student – my girl Ffiona in class! I think she looks just like Trish Goff from Making Faces. What do you think?

I forgot my camera and took these on my Berry, I know. > _ <

I asked Lori a few questions about everything, here’s my favorite question.
Do you only date industry guys?
The great thing about dating industry guys is what they understand. You are at a photoshoot til 3am and they say, aight cool, do your thing. When you are dating someone not in the industry, they will say oh I was waiting for you to come home for dinner *lol*. Yep. But the down side is that you are always around industry people – you need that balance. // side note, Lori is dating a uber famous photog who use to assist Annie Leibovitz. O_O wow. i love perfect couples. good to know.

    What I learned aka realized:
Find out what you love to do, something you would do for free + being paid is extra. Find that thing you love so much that you would never stop doing it. Married or not. That is what I now know. My career is a part of me and not something to do til Mr. Right comes along. I will do what I love, do my best, be recognized for my talents and passion and inspire others. I will never stop doing what I love and I will hone the skills to make a profitable career out of whatever that is. And I will spend everyday figuring that out and letting destiny guide me. The world has a funny way of showing you things sometimes.
Open your heart, close your eyes and say thank you.

    In the Biz: Kibibi Springs

The very best way to learn how to get to where you want to be is to talk to someone who is already there. For those of who are struggling with your career focus or direct, do what I do… find a mentor and be inspire!  Big thank you from HeyDoYou to Miss Kibibi Springs to share her 2 cents with us. A perfect example of how to Do You!

    KIBIBI SPRINGS –  www.TheLivingWellSuite.com

I earned a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara in Communication studies.  Studying in Santa Barbara was my first introduction to the importance of work/life balance.  I earned one of the best educations in communication theory and how to enjoy life and the beach while doing it. 🙂

Since graduating, I have enjoyed a successful 15 year career in marketing communications with top 10 public relations agency Edelman Public Relations, national education non-profit The Milken Family Foundation,  Fortune 500 companies Procter & Gamble Beauty and The Virgin Entertainment Group as well as entrepreneurial experience as a freelance marketing consultant.

Currently I’m pursuing a master’s degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology with a specialization in consumer psychology which I intend to use to continue my career in the management consulting industry.

    City you live in:
    Los Angeles, CA

If there was a theme song in your life, it would be:

Love this question!  This changes frequently because I love music, but right now I would pick Jason Mraz’ Live High.  The lyrics speak to living a life of high integrity and I’m all about that.

What is the best advice you can give to a women who wants that corner office?

Know yourself and get it on your own terms.  In many cases, that corner office can come at the cost of other things in your life.  Before you get to what you envision as the pinnacle to success in your industry, know what you’re going to be asked to sacrifice to make that a reality and be honest with yourself about what you are willing to give to get it.  If the outline for the job you have your eye on requires too much sacrifice for you personally, create that position on your own terms.  Success has many definitions and the ones we’re used to chasing are being reinvented everyday on individually unique terms.

What is the your favorite quote that keeps you motivated?

Oh man, I’m a quote person. I eat and drink them so it’s hard to pick just one.  I’m very partial to quotes from sports coaches so I’ll pick this one:

“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.” – Vince Lombardi

What do you think is the the key to being a successful woman in the marketing industry?

The marketing industry offers a breadth of options in which you can focus your interests.  This makes it a great career choice for someone who’s curious about many different things.  At the same time it can be very easy to get lost in the options available to you.  My advice from this vantage point in my career is explore your options but aim to direct them towards a specialization, something that you are known for and do better than anyone else in your field.

    Kristen Jongen

I was in the Denver airport last week and found the cutest and most inspirational art work by Kristen Jongen. I loved her stuff so much that I bought her book, Growing Wings, for my sister. Jongon’s art work is so raw with emotions that it makes me want to laugh, cry and hug her all at the same time. Here is a true artist who is brave. She not only digs deep but also reflects all every aspect of her life to product beautiful pieces like these. Kristen currently lives in Northern Michigan with her three children, Anya, Mia and Van. Soul Soup is her website and this is a great present for anyone going through a tough time in their life. She is brutal honest, amazingly introspective and her work speaks volumes. I appreciate her work because I identify with tough transitions and the eternal optimism she radiates.

Everyone can always use a lift!

The piece that really caught my eye and may inspire my next tattoo is one of a bird and it says,

I won’t die with my song inside of me.

    Wow.

loves it. Check out more Kristen Jongen here

    The Essential Message

2 months ago, Ty and I went to check out a creative workshop on Spadina where we heard Michel Neray speak. He is the founder of the Essential Message and helped us distill what we are really about. What we are so great at that makes us who we are. He has spoken all over the world and really was inspirational. Michel told us that the best things about ourselves we do not even realize. That is because our best qualities come second nature to us and we cannot step back and even recognize it until you slow down, analyze and take note of what makes you as special as you are. Here is the exercise that we did – maybe you can try it at home!

    1. Take a piece of blank paper and write on the top what you are.
(Marketer, artist, writer, Dj, teacher, designer etc)
    2. Write underneath all the things you hate about people who share your title.
(lazy, unambitious, fake, pretentious, nepotism, predictable etc)
    3. Circle the top three that irk you the most.
    (lazy, fake, predictable)
    4. Turn the paper over and write the opposite of the 3 things you circled
    (hard working, real, unpredictable)
    5. Take a long hard look at it and say to yourself:
I am an exceptional __________ because I am hard working, real & unpredictable!
The things that bother you the most are because you are all about the opposite way. Think about that.
