    Amika’s Obliphica Nourishing Hair Mask

Providing your hair with the occasional extra dose of TLC is essential to maintaining beautiful, healthy hair.  Amika’s Obliphica Nourishing Hair Mask ($40) is a deep conditioner that works on all hair types, from fine to coarse, to restore, smooth and protect.  The key ingredient is Sea Buckthorn Berry (Obliphica), which is also the basis of Amika’s haircare line.  You can use it as an everyday conditioner or as a weekly treatment (simply leave it in longer for deep-conditioning effects).

I used this on my hair, which is fine with very tight curls—always thirsty for extra TLC.  Looking at the small sample packet, I found it laughable to think it would be enough for my entire head, but I was pleasantly surprised that a quarter-size portion was sufficient.  The conditioner was rich and had a sweet, but not overwhelming, scent.  After working it through my hair, I let it sit for 2-3 minutes and rinsed.  I was very happy with the results—my hair felt moisturized and was easily detangled.

TIP: Whenever I want to super deep condition, I do the following:

    • Saturate a hand towel in hot water and microwave it for a few minutes (microwaving isn’t necessary if your tap water gets as hot as mine does!).  Be careful when handling the towel, because it will be HOT!
    • Next, put a shower cap over your conditioner-soaked tresses, then wrap the hot towel around your head and cover with a plastic bag.
    • Chill out until the towel is cool (about 15-20 mins) and voilà —you’ve just given yourself a penetrating deep conditioner!

    Mystery Guy #9

So I ventured to Brooklyn last night and was happily riding the C train. Then I thought for some reason that I too should switch to the G. And look what I see. Nice weather brings out the best in folks and this tall drink of water definitely put forth his best.  Women, both young and old were gawking. I just thought it was kinda funny. This mystery guy, doesn’t leave much of a mystery.

I took this pic, just 3 seconds before he decided to loom over me and say wassup. Oh this are the things I love about New York. What would I have said to you if we had a real conversation? Sigh. I think it’s great that you run, it’s amazing that you are 6’4, cool that you have Chinese tats, blessed that you have a great body – Thank you for stepping up with the sexy and doing you.  We need more people in this world ready to just do whatever and shake thangs up!

    Shrinks When Wet

Who remembers those mandatory swimming sessions during gym class? I remember them..and I hated them. Not because I couldn’t swim, but because it messed with my do.

    I don’t wanna, and I ain’t gonna! lol

I would come to school with cute curls, and by the end of the day I went home looking tore up from the floor up. AND to make it worse, I always seemed to have Phys. Ed earlier on in the day, with more classes to come; so that meant that I had to walk around looking a hot mess for the rest day.

Hair before jumping in the pool…

I tried swimming caps etc, and none of that stuff worked; all I know is that I dove into to the pool with beautiful, shiny, bouncy curls and came up with the kinky of ALL kinkiness… And after enduring at least one hour of torture from my mother’s hot comb in the mornings; it was definitely a slap in the face lol.

Curls magically disappear as SOON as they came in contact with the water… I wasn’t pleased.

I wished I loved my natural hair as a kid… Had I known that 12 years down the road I would absolutely adore it, I wouldn’t have wasted so much time begging for a perm and a sick note to skip gym class… What I once thought was scary, I now find to be one of the most unique and beautiful things about me. I’m grateful to have reached a point in my life where I am able to embrace and appreciate the many gifts I’ve been perfectly blessed with. During my “natural hair journey” I’ve learned many wonderful things and recently found out that natural hair loves and needs water on a daily basis. Say it ain’t so! So now every night before bed, I spritz  a homemade concoction (which contains 85% water) on my hair, twist it, throw on the satin wrap and I’m good to go. When I wake up in the morning, my hair is soft, shiny and tangle free! Oh, and I totally love that it shrinks when wet now.

    let your natural beauty shine!

    peace, love and health

ps: If you have a little girl, or little girls (heck even boys); encourage her to embrace all the unique and beautiful attributes she has been blessed with, before she starts thinking there is something wrong with the way she looks… and starts begging for a perm.
