National Novel Writing Month and Read a New Book Month Coming Up

In the literary world, there’s been a growing call for my diversity represented in novels.  Paige E. Ewing tackles climate change and diversity in her new cozy fantasy novel Explosive Chemistry (Nov. 21, 2023, Owl City Press).

    Paige can talk about:

    • Climate change (Ever heard of hopepunk, solarpunk, cli fi?) – Climate change is an existential threat. Paige can talk about what wonderful things would happen if we did better and what awful things will happen if we don’t.
    • Mixing genresExplosive Chemistry is actual chemistry, made up of mystery, science fiction, fantasy, and even a hint of slow-burn paranormal romance.
    • Neurodivergence – Some of us think even more differently than most. A lot of folks have the concept that having a mental difference means a person doesn’t have the same desires for companionship, or can’t be brilliant, or funny, or useful to society.
    • The importance of a diverse main cast – “Nice thing about being a fiction writer who wants to change the world: it’s your world, and you can change it.” It’s important for members of the audience to be represented in all aspects, and diversity is something Paige is passionate about in her writing and in her day-to-day life.

    ABOUT THE BOOK

Including a neurodivergent main character and a diverse cast of quirky companions, Explosive Chemistry is the second installment of the Liliana and the Fae of Fayetteville series that started with Precise Oaths. Explosive Chemistry is an urban fantasy, paranormal slow-burn romance set 30 years into a hopeful future where fossil fuels are obsolete. Liliana, a reluctant spider-kin fortune teller, is faced with the task of solving the mystery of who killed four soldiers at Fort Liberty. Follow along as Liliana reluctantly bands together with irritating (…at first) Fae Colonel as they defend their close friends, an oak goblin doctor and a fairy with a penchant for machine guns, from becoming the next victims. Including a neurodivergent main character, a diverse cast of quirky companions, and a variety of romantic and platonic relationships, Explosive Chemistry is the second installment of the Liliana and the Fae of Fayetteville series that started with Precise Oaths.

High Brow Literary Magazine to Broaden Horizons

What’s on the art-crowds coffee tables? For many, it’s the edgy and award-winning design from a relatively unknown new contender in the literary world, but with plenty of art-crowd clout.

The Continental Literary Magazine (TCLM) is a new-ish literary magazine with the nods of artists like Marina Abramović, Noam Chomsky, Ken Liu and European it-writers like Hungarian author Áfra János and many more (all of which have written for the magazine). From the controversies of AI’s to poets in the throes of war, TCLM is creating a globalized salon of discourse.

Each issue of TCLM includes an artist feature. NOIR features black-and-white photos from within New York City’s Chelsea Hotel by photographer and filmmaker Tony Notarberardino while FUTURE features the striking paintings of Romanian-born Botond Keresztesi, which are done on canvas but have a particular digital appearance.

Each issue contains written fiction, nonfiction, and poetry pieces as well as an interview. Want to learn more about Robert Englund’s time with Freddy Krueger and A Nightmare on Elm Street? BEAST is the issue for you! Other interview subjects include Noam Chomsky, Marina Abramović, Abel Ferrara, Fran Lebowitz, and Albert-László Barabási.

Material Wealth: Mining the Personal Archive of Allen Ginsberg

powerHouse Books is pleased to announce the November 21, 2023 release of

Material Wealth: Mining the Personal Archive of Allen Ginsberg

Compiled and Annotated by Pat Thomas

    Introduction by Anne Waldman

Plus previously unpublished Ginsberg from his personal archive including unseen poems, journal entries, and thoughts on Dylan’s ‘Idiot Wind’

“Seeing Ginsberg was like going to see the Oracle of Delphi. He didn’t care about material wealth or political power.   He was his own kind of king. He achieved what any poet could hope to achieve.  ‘I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness.’  Very few poets have done that. Robert Frost, maybe. We still remember those lines today. Today’s poets don’t reach into the public consciousness that way. So it was remarkable that Allen had actually broken through.” — Bob Dylan

A prolific poet, raconteur, activist, and thinker, Allen Ginsberg was also a prolific collector, meticulously saving letters, postcards, draft notes and manuscripts, photographs and snapshots, appearance bills and rally broadsheets, not only featuring him personally, but also his fellow poets, singers, lovers, writers, journey companions, friends, and agitators. Gathered here publicly for the first time is his personal archive of events and experiences documenting his life as a young man, breakaway poet, expansive spirit, curious intellectual traveler, and relentless enthusiast of the provocative and the profane.

There are hundreds of thousands of items carefully stored and archived at Stanford University’s Allen Ginsberg collection. Counterculture historian Pat Thomas, with the full cooperation of the Allen Ginsberg Estate’s Peter Hale, has compiled and annotated a remarkable volume of material, unearthing in the process one astounding find after another. The result is a tome of previously unpublished historical paperwork and vintage graphics and photographs and ephemera that promises an unprecedented look inside one of the most prolific poets and agitators of cultural mores of the 20th century.

A poster for Patti Smith’s first-ever poetry reading. Correspondence from Allen’s stint as literary agent for William S. Burroughs and Herbert Huncke. Yippie manifestos from Jerry Rubin, Abbie Hoffman, and John Sinclair of the MC5. A ticket for a 1974 concert by Bob Dylan & The Band (with Yoko Ono’s phone number scribbled on the back). Posters documenting early Beat Generation readings in 1950s San Francisco as well as later ones capturing the 1960s Haight-Ashbury Hippie era.

Allen’s own remarkable journey is here, too: agreements for BBC Radio appearances, schedules of lecture tours, notes for his iconic ‘Kaddish’ poem. A parody of ‘Howl’ as ‘Towel’ by Terry Southern. Obsessive letters from fans he never met.

Though this project is so much more than a book of Allen’s photography, the featured images can’t go unmentioned: Allen’s lens finds not only Kerouac, Corso, Burroughs, and other Beats, but also Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Philip Glass, Norman Mailer, Marianne Faithful, Anne Waldman, Iggy Pop, Don Cherry, Robert Frank, and Patti Smith. You’ll find he often scribbled his affection for the subject right on the photo itself.

Packed with ephemera you’ve never seen, Material Wealth is a smorgasbord of things that most of us would have tossed away decades ago: notes to oneself, accounting statements, letters of intent, fan and media crushes, criticisms and critiques, posters of events now considered historical and cultural canon, political manifestos, et al.

These are just a few of the intriguing items folded between the pages of the one Ginsberg book that has never been—and needed to be done: a visual annotated compendium that reveals one of the unparalleled minds of his generation.

Find an insert of previously unpublished Ginsberg from his personal archives including unseen poems, journal entries, and thoughts on Dylan’s ‘Idiot Wind’ at the back of the book!

Pat Thomas is a counterculture historian and archival music producer (and liner-note writer) whose expertise and interests have helped him author such books as Listen, Whitey! The Sights & Sounds of Black Power 1965–1975 and Did It! Jerry Rubin: An American Revolutionary. He has co-curated Invitation to Openness: The Jazz & Soul Photography of Les McCann 1960-1980, co-edited My Week Beats Your Year: Encounters with Lou Reed, an anthology of interviews about the iconic musician, and contributed to The (Original) Adventures of Ford Fairlane: The Long Lost Rock n’ Roll Detective and Kerouac on Record: A Literary Soundtrack. Thomas was a consultant on the PBS documentary The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution and compiled the 3-CD box set The Last Word on First Blues for the Allen Ginsberg Estate (1970s recordings of Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, and Arthur Russell), and the 2-CD set Songs of Innocence and Experience of Ginsberg’s 1969 recordings (with Don Cherry and Elvin Jones) putting William Blake poems to music with vocals by Allen.

Pat Thomas has worked with a range of musicians including Les McCann, Gene McDaniels, Black Panther Elaine Brown, the Watts Prophets, and members of the Last Poets. Other projects include organizing the first-ever American release of Public Image Limited’s debut album (with rare bonus material), Roky Erickson’s 1970s & 80s solo albums, and previously unreleased recordings from Tim Buckley, Judee Sill, The Dream Syndicate, and Herbie Mann with Sonny Sharrock. He was a co-music supervisor/co-producer for the new Judee Sill documentary, Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill.

In addition to Material Wealth, he is also working on a book about comedian/TV personality Ernie Kovacs.
