The Race to Net Zero is on as 24 youth activists monitor the climate commitments presented by global leaders in a new video series launching in January, 2022.

The gap between where we are now – the pathways for decarbonization that nations have submitted and the pathways that science is telling us are required if we are going to stick to the 1.5 degree target planetary warming ceiling – is vast. At Cop26, almost 200 countries and parties agreed to decarbonization plans. The road to Net Zero includes phasing out coal power, getting rid of fossil fuel subsidies, curtailing deforestation, encouraging investment in renewables, focusing on adaptation policies for both wealthy and developing nations, and working together to deliver.

COP26 is over. How will youth keep the drive to 1.5 alive?

“Planet Classroom is delighted to continue our collaboration with the POP Movement. Since 2016, POP has played a key role in addressing the massive challenge for climate change action and protecting the earth’s ecosystems. Their international youth leaders have extensive knowledge about climate change problems and solutions, and we are eager to showcase their efforts as they seek to ensure that the world’s leaders deliver on their climate promises,” said Cathy Rubin, Co-founder of Planet Classroom.

“At the POP Movement, we aim to harness the talent and determination of youth inspired by knowledge on a global scale. This program would progress only on the strength of our partners ensuring the sharing of information. If we want to protect this planet and its ecosystems for the survival of all species and the welfare of future generations, we need all hands on deck, and the active involvement of like-minded individuals and organizations. We are honored to continue our invaluable partnership with Planet Classroom,” said Dr. Ash Pachauri Senior Mentor, POP Movement.

“National Net Zero targets have exploded into the mainstream, but not all targets are made equal. To slash emissions by half this decade, the race to zero has to move from pledging targets to delivering them. Deeds speak louder than words: you can’t just intend to lose weight, you also need a plan, interim milestones and an accountability framework to achieve your goals. The race to net zero by mid-century has well and truly begun, but unlike most races, we win or lose this one together,” said John Lang, Net Zero Tracker lead, Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit

“On a daily basis, a deluge of academic studies, reports and news tell us that the Earth’s ecosystem is in danger. They further warn that we need more than just information to address the climate crisis, protect the environment, and promote a sustainable way of living. We need action. Education plays a pivotal role in raising awareness and sensitivity about the environment. It must provide the foundational knowledge and skills to identify and resolve environmental challenges, and shape attitudes and behaviors that lead to both individual and collective action,” said Andreas Schleicher, OECD Director for Education and Skills.

    WHAT

Net Zero is a video and podcast series in which youth leaders from the POP (Protect Our Planet) Movement in association with the Planet Classroom track the progress being made by international thought leaders to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

    HOW

24 Climate Activists from 24 nations around the world will create an original video and podcast series with their local environmental thought leaders as guests to follow-up on the progress countries are making on their climate pledges since COP26.

    WHEN

Net Zero will be streamed on the Planet Classroom Network beginning on Tuesday February 1, 2022. Information on youth climate activist reporters and international guests will be announced shortly beforehand.

Net Zero refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount removed from our atmosphere. We reach net zero when the amount we add is no more than the amount taken away. Youth will challenge leadership on how they can achieve this and why it matters.

The number of countries announcing pledges to achieve Net Zero emissions over the coming decades continues to grow but what will it take to accomplish the goal and give the world an even chance of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5 percent?

About the Protect Our Planet Movement

The Protect Our Planet (POP) Movement is an initiative designed to address the urgent need to share information and knowledge with the youth on solutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN, mitigate climate change, and adapt to its growing impacts. Intended to ultimately reach the size, scale, and momentum to become a global movement, POP mobilizes the youth worldwide to take collective action needed to mitigate climate change and protect threatened ecosystems.

    About the Planet Classroom Network

The Planet Classroom Network, organized by CMRubinWorld, brings together musicians, dancers, video game creators, filmmakers, activists, learning innovators and emerging technologists from around the world to entertain, educate and engage youth, and to provide a rich cultural experience for all. Content showcased for youth and by youth on the Planet Classroom Network is provided by 29 cultural organizations from around the world. Young people globally played a significant role in conceptualizing, creating, and producing the network’s vision and programming.

Time to reshape the future of clean water access says Bluewater founder and CEO

Amid looming climate change and mounting pollution, it’s time to reshape the world’s clean water access future, says Bluewater founder and CEO Bengt Rittri in New Year call for more protection for our right to clean water

In a New Year call for urgent action to protect our right to clean water, Mr. Rittri noted that clean water is a fundamental human right recognized by the United Nations. Yet, he said, tens of millions of people in poor and rich countries alike lack access to safe tap water for personal and domestic use due to the impact of climate change and pollution on water availability and quality.

Mr. Rittri added that access will become less predictable due to more droughts, increased flooding, and ongoing contamination of freshwater sources. As a consequence, the Bluewater CEO said no one on the planet today should take having access to safe, great-tasting water for granted. He believes the need to reshape the future of access to clean water has never been more paramount.

A wholly-owned member of the Blue family, Bluewater is a world leader in advanced drinking water technologies for homes, businesses, and public dispensing solutions.

Bluewater has put finding sustainable ways to protect human health from the impact of toxic contaminants in drinking water at the heart of its business mission. The company is seeking to empower consumers and businesses with technological solutions that help assure access to better tap water quality.

A Bluewater study in February 2021 confirmed that the company’s top-of-the-line Bluewater Pro purifier successfully removes up to 99.99% of health-threatening PFAS chemicals from water, including PFOA, PFOS, PFBA, and PFBS, which have been found in the tap water of communities worldwide.

Bluewater has waged a campaign against single-use plastic bottles since its founding in 2013 by Bengt Rittri. The Swedish environmental entrepreneur has spurred the development of a zero plastic bottle business model by Bluewater that enables events, festivals, and other public dispensing operations to harness a planet-friendly hydration ecosphere combining Bluewater’s water purification solutions with the firm’s sustainable water bottles.

    • About 4 billion people, representing nearly two-thirds of the global population, experience severe water scarcity during at least one month of the year, says the United Nations
    • 97.5% of the water on Earth is too salty to use
    • An estimated half a trillion plastic bottles will have been sold in 2021, according to the Beyond Plasticwebsite. It cites predictions that plastic will outweigh fish in the ocean by 2050.
    • 32% of the 78 million tons of plastic packaging produced annually is left to flow into our oceans, says the Earth Day Network
    • In 2021, the Bluewater Events business helped numerous world leading sports and other organisations, from the British Open golf tournament to the Cape Town Marathon, implement plastic free events that halted the need for over 2 million single-use water bottles.

“Most single-use plastic bottles of water end up in oceans and landfills where they break down into chemical-leaching microplastics that threaten human health and wellbeing by disrupting human hormones,” said Mr. Rittri. He noted that recent research by environmental scientists at the New York University School of Medicine found microplastics used in bottles and polyester textiles are ten times higher in baby poop than in adult stool.

The Bluewater chief executive and owner said there was an urgent need for the world to understand that clean drinking water is a finite source.

“Of all the water on our planet, barely 3 percent is fresh, and that is under threat from industrial and agricultural pollution, overdevelopment, and the emerging climate catastrophe. It’s time to reshape the way we access, produce and use clean water. The onus is increasingly upon us as individuals to ensure the water we put into our bodies is clean of chemicals and other toxic junk,” Mr. Rittri said.

Protect yourself and your mini-me’s from the harsh rays of the sun and the drying cold weather

Spending the day at the beach? Maybe just outdoors. Spending any amount of time outside means you should likely be wearing at least some amount of sun protection. It can be hard to find sunscreen that is safe for your little ones (not to mention the planet!) so we wanted to draw your attention to some recent discoveries. We all know by now that using sunblock is one of the best and easiest ways to protect your skin from sunburn, cancer, premature aging, and quite a few other problems. From babyhood on up- don’t forget the sunscreen.

According to Johns Hopkins, you should use it daily. For your “day-to-day use, pick a sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. If you spend time outdoors, choose a product with SPF 60 or greater. In reality, most people do not use as much sunscreen as they should, and this higher SPF helps compensate. To protect your face, neck, arms and legs, you’ll need about 1 ounce of sunscreen. Squeezed into your hand, 1 ounce of sunscreen is enough to completely cover your palm. So long as the sunscreen is at least SPF 30, water-resistant, broad-spectrum and applied about 15 minutes before going outside, it doesn’t matter in what order you apply your skincare products. Some people find it’s easiest to work with bare skin — before makeup or moisturizer have been added. Find what works best for your routine.”

Even in the winter, your baby’s skin needs protection from the harmful UV rays the sun emits. Make it a habit to apply sunscreen daily to your little ones to prevent sun damage to their sensitive skin and reduce their chances of getting skin cancer later in life.

Committed to using certified organic fruit and vegetable-based ingredients, Earth Baby’s products are non-toxic, gentle, and effective on baby skin, hair, and body. About Whiskee Straw

The Whiskee Straw was created by Anissa. She is a busy wife and mom of three and ALWAYS on the go. After struggling to use a “plain jane” straw to mix drinks such as iced coffee or dirty up multiple utensils to make her kiddos chocolate milk, this momma got tired of the mess and the hassle – not to mention the disaster of trying to use the normal straw to keep protein shakes and smoothies blended once they started to separate. Ugh! So one day, with a drink in hand that was in desperate need of being mixed before Anissa sipped, a brilliant idea came to mind! She needed a way to mix her drink without taking out straw! So she sat there thinking to herself, if only there was a whisk on her straw… wait a second, a whisk! That was it! So Anissa hurried home and told her husband about her GREAT idea and with the help from her husband and kids, they dreamt up the vision Anissa had and VOILA! The Whiskee Straw™️ was born! Anissa’s husband then took the sketched idea and brought it to life by welding it together. From there they handed it off to be tested by their children. It was a hit! They even came up with them name. Now, they don’t go anywhere without Whiskee Straw™️!

The Perfect Sustainable Straws for Your Year-Begin Celebrations

Start the new year with sustainable straws for your favorite healthy beverages. Designed by harnessing the raw power of mother nature, EQUO’s reusable straws are a great ecological alternative to reduce single-use plastic consumption. Made from natural ingredients, such as coconut and sugarcane, they’ll never get soggy and last an infinite amount of time in liquids.

EQUO Limited Edition Coconut and Sugarcane Drinking Straws,
    Biodegradable and Plastic-Free,
    Combo Pack of 100, Standard

These eco-friendly, natural straws are made from fermented coconut water and sugarcane fiber. Both the coconut and sugarcane straws are tasteless, allowing you to enjoy a biodegradable straw without changing the flavor of your beverage. The sugarcane straws have a light, sweet aroma that is pleasant to smell.

    COCONUT STRAWS

As a popular ingredient in Vietnam, coconut water is often used for drinking or for cooking. But at EQUO, they take advantage of this abundant and natural ingredient by fermenting it and putting it into production that goes through multiple heat and steaming stages to dry, harden and shape to produce our wonderful Coconut Straw.

Made from locally sourced, natural materials (just like all EQUO other straw family members), the Coconut Straw is the newest innovation that adds a tropical twist on an everyday product. They have a cool texture that remind you of that once upon a time when you were relaxing in a tropical paradise. Unlike paper straws, the coconut straws are sturdy and maintain their shape for a few hours without getting soggy or disintegrating in to little bits in your beverage.

    SUGARCANE STRAWS

The sugarcane plant, abundant in the lands of Taiwan, is a familiar raw material used often to make sugarcane juice, molasses, sugar and other sweet products. EQUO uses the leftover fibrous stalk after the plant’s juices are extracted to make the durable Sugarcane Straw. Take a quick whiff of the straw and you’ll get a hint of a light brown sugar aroma – without the extra sugary calories.

EQUO sugarcane straws are a great alternative to reduce single-use plastic consumption and ocean pollution. They have a very similar texture and flexibility to a plastic straw while being 100% natural. The most durable straw will never get soggy and can be used multiple times in the same day.

    Grass Drinking Straws
    100% Plastic-free, Biodegradable and Compostable

Harvested from nature and crafted with care, EQUO grass straws are an evergreen replacement to artificial plastic straws and poorly made alternatives. Made using sedge grass that is handpicked, washed, dried, and cut to size, this straw features a cool green color and a refreshing tea aroma that will turn your favorite drinks into little cups of joy that you’ll love sipping along. The naturally durable material is resistant to high temperatures, retains its shape even after multiple uses, and also lets you fidget while enjoying your drink—all in all, it’s a delight to drink out of.

Available in 3 different sizes, this green and gorgeous straw will be your go-to for enjoying everything from ice teas to mojitos.

    THE GRASS STRAW

Introducing the EQUO Grass straw! These straws are made from dried grass, AKA a gift from mother nature. They give off a “just rained in nature” aroma, and you can crunch them between your fingers after you finish your drink. Perfect for the fidgeter in your life!

    Coconut Drinking Straws
    100% Plastic-free, Biodegradable and Compostable

A tropical treat to sip your favourite juices, smoothies, and freshly brewed coffees, EQUO Coconut Straws will have you ditching plastic straws and switching to something eco-safe and planet-friendly. These straws make do with all the things you hate about standard recyclable straws—the sogginess, inability to reuse, and lack of heat resistance—to give you a sustainable alternative that lasts and works just as good as plastic straws.

Made using fermented coconut water, these biodegradable straws go through multiple heat and steaming stages to dry, harden and shape for use. They contain absolutely no chemicals or toxic materials.

    THE COCONUT STRAWS

Made from locally sourced, natural materials (just like all EQUO other straw family members), the Coconut Straw is the newest innovation that adds a tropical twist on an everyday product. Natural materials mean these straws will naturally decompose with no harm to the environment.

    Rice Drinking Straws
    100% Plastic-free, Biodegradable and Compostable

Let’s kick the plastic habit to the curb with a little help from these rice straws. Made using rice and tapioca starch, these straws are incredibly resilient, versatile, and nifty. Great for single uses, these straws are colored using natural vegetable and fruit juices to give you the stylish aesthetics of plastic straws without putting a strain on the planet. EQUO rice straws also make for great composts, giving back to the planet long after you’re done enjoying that last sip.

    THE RICE STRAWS

The Rice Straws don’t have an aroma and are edible. You can wash and cook them down into congee, porridge, or another rice-based recipe

When mentioning the value of a straw, many people think about the tangible value – the cost of that product. EQUO tends to compare the selling price of green cutlery products with single-use plastic cutlery products, and sometimes choose plastic products because we assume “It’s just a straw.”

Did you know that a plastic straw made in 1888 is still on the Earth today and will continue to exist for at least the next 200 years. Of the total amount of plastic waste discharged into the environment each year, only about 9% of it is recycled, the rest will be discharged directly into the ocean or treated by incineration or landfill.

Either way, this amount of plastic waste leaves unpredictable consequences for the natural environment and human health. Therefore, the price we pay for plastic straws may be a bargain today, but will amount in unmeasurable impacts through pollution in the future.

EQUO’s green solutions won’t last for years after you use them – they decompose in a few months. Change the habit of using plastic straws with EQUO today!
