    500 Days of Summer

If you follow my Twitter you will know that Sharky put me onto this movie a few months ago. After I watched it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it!  Consequently, my latest Beauty project for FIDM is to build a fragrance based on a movie soundtrack was on Summer and Tom.  Here is what it looks like.

    front cover
    back cover
If you want to read the essay that goes along with it, click Beauty Case Studies here.

Since this movie was filmed in Downtown LA and I recognize parts like 4th and Hill and Angel’s Flight, I did some digging.  Thanks to Google and IMBD, I found Marc Webb (the Director)’s agency DNA. The same one that Lil X is signed to.

How cool. I am going to mail this to him because I think he will like it. I hope he gets it.  *cross my fingers*

    Here is the inside
I used NightBlooming Jasmine to represent Summer’s character and Vanilla to represent Tom’s love for her.
Smell is the sense connected strongest with memory. Behind the vial are snapshots of their relationship so it appears that all their emotions are encapsulated inside the fragrance. I wish you could smell it!
Scratch and sniff the screen ^_^

PS: I used Track #9 off the soundtrack, you can hear it here.

    In the Biz: Lori Taylor

FiDM  is amazing because of all the cool opportunities we get to meet industry gurus, ask questions and get inspire.  In my Tuesday class, our instructor Jeanne Tamayo invited Smashbox’s Lori Taylor to speak with us. She is a powerhouse. Let me tell you. With patent over the knee boots, chic boyfriend blazer with leather details, her mini Smashbox kit, clear lens gold aviators and matte red lipstick…. loves it.

    Lori inspires me

Starting at a counter, loving the biz, self taught and passionate, Lori is now the Pro Artist relations manager at Smashbox – aka – her dream job.  She never calls in sick because she loves what she does. And she is off to Hawaii this week, business trip!

    Found this over at BeautyBlitz.com

Lori says the best gift you can give someone is the gift of confidence. Make someone beautiful…I even stayed after class to tell her about using weave glue for lashes I heard over at 2BD. We were so fortunate to look through her portfolio and watch her demo on one lucky beauty student – my girl Ffiona in class! I think she looks just like Trish Goff from Making Faces. What do you think?

I forgot my camera and took these on my Berry, I know. > _ <

I asked Lori a few questions about everything, here’s my favorite question.
Do you only date industry guys?
The great thing about dating industry guys is what they understand. You are at a photoshoot til 3am and they say, aight cool, do your thing. When you are dating someone not in the industry, they will say oh I was waiting for you to come home for dinner *lol*. Yep. But the down side is that you are always around industry people – you need that balance. // side note, Lori is dating a uber famous photog who use to assist Annie Leibovitz. O_O wow. i love perfect couples. good to know.

    What I learned aka realized:
Find out what you love to do, something you would do for free + being paid is extra. Find that thing you love so much that you would never stop doing it. Married or not. That is what I now know. My career is a part of me and not something to do til Mr. Right comes along. I will do what I love, do my best, be recognized for my talents and passion and inspire others. I will never stop doing what I love and I will hone the skills to make a profitable career out of whatever that is. And I will spend everyday figuring that out and letting destiny guide me. The world has a funny way of showing you things sometimes.
Open your heart, close your eyes and say thank you.

    Fred Segal – Studio Beautymix

The beauty section of Fred Segal has an impressive range of products, special selection of exclusive brands and an inviting atmosphere. When you enter to beauty section, there is a extensive fragrance collection and numerous extravagantly wrapped soaps, lotions and all things wonderful.

I have not heard of most of these brands; they are very boudoir and mostly organic. One of the brands that stuck out to me was the Crazy Sticks. They are solid perfume in a stick and their collection is extensive. With scent stories like Russian leather, vanilla, elemi crystals, ozonic flower and cedar – these ‘caress-like perfumes’ are free of paraben, alcohol and coloring agents. The rich marketing stories that come along with each sent is as rich and multi layered as the fragrance itself. There was marketing material provided in mini booklets under the product which was very helpful. One of the items included in the promotional material included a free gift, a Crazy Stick holder. So yummy, and so cute!

Towards the back of the store, color cosmetic brands like Stila, Smashbox took stage left. The center display was of Orlane and La Mer. Towards the right of the store it featured a beautiful rainbow display of custom skin care line that are packaged syringes.  There was also a section for Dianne Brill, a vintage style color cosmetic brand with catchy names and beautiful products. Miniature lipgloss in a truffle box, and cute names like ‘panties in a bunch’ and ‘fresh water pearl foundation’ make this line memorable, fun and reminiscent of old Hollywood glam.

The other brand that stood out to me was mojo cosmetics. The packaging is very industrial, silver and shiny in bullets.  It has an old school war-time feel with ‘propaganda style’ advertising. These brands are off the chain and very niche.. Not your everyday Sephora brand, ya dig? 🙂

Fred Segal has a beauty niche filled with little-known brands and invites shoppers on a journey to discover their new must-have products.  Check it out here.
