Here’s a D.I.Y. project I worked on a while back. Even though there wasn’t any crazy fabric manipulation, I did have to iron each and every piece of fabric so that it would stick to the shoes perfectly, so I think that counts… right? lolDSC03811If you’re a D.I.Y expert or you’ve always wanted to attend Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, I would totally recommend participating!

    Good luck!

ps: The competition is only open to the Tri-state area and Philadelphia *****

What Kind of Pet Parent Are You?

“You can tell a lot about a person by the type of pet they have,” says Kristen Levin, a pet lifestyle expert and author of Pampered Pets on a Budget. Whether your cat has her own Facebook page or your dog is a regular on Dog-Shaming.com, it’s likely your pet has pawed its way into your heart — and the hearts of your friends and family — and you couldn’t imagine life any other way.

Take the following quiz to figure out what type of pet parent you are, and then explore the suggested pet care options that best suit both of your needs.

Pet Quiz! From pageant to hipster, what type of pet parent are you?: Find out on CARE.com

    No surprise here

You probably hate the word “hipster” and why wouldn’t you? Your unique taste and style aren’t based on current trends, but actual interests. And the fact that it’s now trendy to be hip is pretty annoying. But you and your pet can shake it off. You both have a pretty aloof and independent vibe, so nothing bothers you too much. Your up-and-coming trendy urban area has lots of animals, parks and coffee shops with dog treats at the counter. But you actually lived there before it was cool. You love being outdoors and have contemplated living in Boulder or Portland, somewhere you can ride your bike everywhere and bring your pet to lunch.

For Dog Owners: You love being outside with your hound, and are always researching new pup-friendly restaurants, cafes and parks.

    DIY Hand Sanitizer

September marks the start of the season every parent comes to dread: cold and flu season. As children take their play indoors, germs circulate more quickly, leading to six months of increased infections that can, at any point, turn a day of school or work into cancelled meetings and time spent coughing on the couch.

As with all illnesses, prevention is better than the cure. While many parents turn to hand sanitizer to kill germs, these store-bought concoctions can contain alcohol and harsh chemicals. Dr. Lawrence Rosen, a nationally recognized expert in Pediatric Integrative Medicine, shares this recipe for a gentler – and equally effective – homemade hand sanitizer:

    Homemade Hand Sanitizer

    Ingredients:
    •       3 oz. filtered water
    •       1 tsp. aloe vera gel
    •       10 drops cinnamon essential oil
    •       10 drops clove essential oil
    •       10 drops rosemary essential oil
    •       10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
    •       20 drops lemon oil

Instructions: Mix ingredients in a 4-ounce spray dispenser, and shake gently. Spray on children’s hands, and teach them to massage the spray into their hands for 30 seconds. The result is a natural, chemical free, hand sanitizer to keep germs at bay.

Of course, some illnesses are unavoidable. When a cold or flu does strike, Dr. Rosen recommends using Sambucol (black elderberry extract) to help alleviate symptoms faster. Researchers have found that influenza patients treated with elderberry recover four days faster, on average, than those not receiving treatment. Elderberry is safe for children two years or older – which means your kids can get back to school faster when recovering from the flu.

Dr. Rosen, along with holistic-minded parent Jeff Cohen, recently published a book of natural remedies for nearly 100 common childhood ailments – everything from acne to urinary tract infections. The book, Treatment Alternatives for Children: Reduce Serious Side Effects with Natural Equivalents to Conventional Remedies for Common Childhood Ailments, is a resource for parents who want to find alternatives to prescription antibiotics and other conventional treatments that sometimes have harsh side effects. Like Dr. Rosen’s approach to preventing, and treating, the flu, each ailment is addressed from the perspective of the child’s overall wellbeing.
