    Glass Blown

If you can’t handle the heat, stay outta the workshop!

I went to my very first glass blowing class in Hollywood and made some fantastic glass globes aka Christmas ornaments!  The instructor, Kathy Reimer has been doing this for over 10 years and loves glass as a medium for so many possibilities. If you are in LA and intersted in doing some ‘grounding exercises’ – I highly suggest this class!  I signed up through the LA City College’s extension courses but I am sure you can sign up directly with Kathy too.

We learned 3 techniques, the basic blowing a sphere, heat it up while turning it like a mini rotisserie chicken. When it gets ‘red hot’ you remove from flame, blow while turning it – not too big! Cuz the glass is super thin, it will break for sure. This is one of my faves that I made but it was way too big, and so it broke 🙁

and then sometimes it looks perfect but then it ‘pops’ because it wasn’t heated all the way around the bulb.

The key to doing this is to concentrate, get the right timing and be precise. Here are some of the other ones I made.

There were 8 people who came to do this, one couple, three random girls and one random guy and me. So… it wasn’t really a ‘Hey! Let’s take pics for my blog!’ kind of class O_O… So I discretely filmed some footage cuz I really wanted to share with you! The loud sound is the gas flame thing.. so turn off the sound.. I don’t actually say anything.
    Safety first 🙂

    Here is how it’s done!

Here I am adding the line of glass onto the tube before heating it up, and then blowing it. They are then put under the blankets to cool so it will not experience ‘thermal shock’ and break.

    PCC Flea Market

Every first Sunday of the month, the Pasadena City College has a huge flea market with over 450 vendors. They are spread through out the parking lot, and even in the underground parking garage. They have a lot of antiques, vintage and assorted knick knacks. Some would say trash, some would say treasures. For me, I love things with stories and meanings. How often do we keep nostalgic items like faded movie tickets or that one necklace or old belt you just love. Going to a place like this made me think about consumerism and how many things we go through in life. To buy, to have, to discard. Such is life.

    LP’s vs. Mp3’s

    Ferragamo pumps 🙂

    Vintage Ferragamo

    nasty see-thru Jordans 🙁

Hey DJs! Remember hauling crates to the club?

    Garage sale -type goodies

I use to have one of these wicker strollers for my doll 😉

    Old Hollywood Glam

    Seashore goodies

Kind of love these. These are great for DIY projects!

    Tons of tons of scarves

    Pendants
lots of people came out to see how far they can stretch their buck

If you are in town, on the first Sunday of the month and you are up for a little bit of treasure hunting – you should definitely check this out!
What are your thoughts about flea markets and garage sales?

    Remembering Michael

(Sorry for the crappy quality, i had to get it off my blackberry then to some avi file and lost the audio in the process. Basically what you missed is me saying Hi everyone, it’s your girl Yvonne from HeyDoYou! I am overwhelmed by everyone here with their outpour of emotions. They are also screaming $5 t-shirts at the camera as I filmed them – the pics are better 🙂 )

MJ fans flood the street of Downtown LA today and even some of FIDM student orientation things had to be rescheduled because of the memorial that took place this morning. Since I don’t have a TV and didn’t think to watch live on CNN.com (til I got back!), I headed down to talk to some of the fans that celebrated Michael Jackson life as the King of Pop.

    Kick, push down 7th

Various vendors selling various versions of T’s for $5

    The littlest vendor

Cash is King – Michael Money anyone?

This is how much parking costed today. (I took the Metro for $1.25)

Millions all over the world tuned in the watch the Michael Jackson public memorial. I went down to the Staples Center to see all the emotional fans, the hustlers, the t-shirt sellers, the water vendors and whole assortment of people who wanted to get involved in this global event. I also took some video on my Blackberry, just have to figure out how to convert it.
