Gondwana Ecotours Announces “Solar Maximum” Alaska Northern Lights Adventure
Gondwana Ecotours is excited to announce an eight-day “Alaska Northern Lights Adventure.” Guests will get a dose of local culture by day and photograph the Aurora Borealis under the massive Alaskan sky by night. Highlights of the tour include dogsledding through snowy forests, taking curling lessons from locals, enjoying a meal with homesteaders, soaking in a geothermal hot spring, learning how to photograph the Aurora Borealis, snowshoeing on private land, having tea with a family of reindeer herders, and more. This season is extra special because solar maximum, the highest rate of solar activity during the sun’s 11-year solar cycle, is predicted to occur between late 2024 and 2026, which can result in even higher activity of Aurora Borealis. Gondwana Ecotours is offering an array of Alaska Northern Lights depa
rtures from September 2024 – March 2025. The “Alaska Northern Lights Adventure” starts at $4,595 per person double occupancy and includes all lodging, meals, and personal wake-up calls when Aurora is active. Flights are not included. For more information, visit https://www.gondwanaecot ours.com/adventure-tours/ northern-lights-tour- fairbanks-alaska/.
“As the solar cycle approaches its peak in 2024, scientists and enthusiasts alike are eagerly anticipating the heightened activity of the Aurora Borealis,” said Gondwana Ecotours VP Eric Segalstad. “With stronger solar flares and increased solar wind, the mesmerizing dance of colors in the night sky is expected to be even more spectacular than usual.”
Guests will view the Northern Lights displays from a family-owned lodge with magnificent panoramic views. During the day there will be time to explore Fairbanks, take an exciting sled dog ride, or rejuvenate in the natural hot springs at Chena. Fairbanks is situated within a ring-shaped region around the North Pole called the auroral oval. This location affords a terrific balance of occurrence, frequency, and activity of Northern Lights.
“The best part of this tour is the people we meet,” said Gondwana Ecotours Founder Jared Sternberg. “We visit a local family who lives off the grid and hear about their lifestyle in the Alaskan backcountry. We learn the game of curling from interesting locals, and even have tea with a family who raises reindeer.”
Trip Highlights
- Witness the magic of the Northern Lights, including personal wake-up calls when the Aurora appears.
- Ride dogsleds through the snowy spruce forests and fields of the great Alaskan wilderness.
- Explore an ice sculpture museum and enjoy a drink at their famous ice-bar.
- Discover how locals live in Interior Alaska from natives and homesteaders.
- Soak in steaming geothermal hot springs under the starry night sky as you watch for the Aurora.
- Hike in the forest with friendly reindeer, feeding them and learning from the family who raises them.

Sara Blakely Sends 1,000 Girls Across the Country to Camp Invention This Summer
Sara Blakely, the inventor and founder of Spanx, is giving full scholarships to send 1,000 girls across the country to Camp Invention® this summer.
“My hope is that this gift will inspire the next generation of female leaders and industry disruptors. Only 13% of primary patent holders are women, and when I started Spanx, that number was even lower… it was only 6.8%,” Blakely said. “We need more products and ideas generated from the feminine perspective. Women have so many gifts to bring into the world… imagine if their full potential could be realized. I’m so excited to partner with the National Inventors Hall of Fame to send young girls to Camp Invention this summer so they too can have the confidence to dream up ideas and solve problems for the world.”
In addition to the financial gift, each girl will also receive a “lucky” red backpack. “I started Spanx with my lucky red backpack from college. It was with me every step of the way. The lucky red backpack is a symbol of starting small while dreaming big and that everything you need is right there on your back. It’s even hung on the wall and framed at Spanx HQ as an inspiring symbol,” Blakely said.
For more than three decades, Camp Invention, a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame® in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, has developed confidence and problem-solving skills for girls and boys through authentic, hands-on STEM activities inspired by its Inductees. Camp Invention promotes STEM learning; builds leadership, perseverance and resourcefulness; and encourages entrepreneurship — in an exciting and engaging environment.
“The National Inventors Hall of Fame pays it forward through our education programs, competitions and events,” said National Inventors Hall of Fame CEO Michael Oister. “We are appreciative of Sara Blakely’s donation, specifically to support girls’ access to invention education and hands-on STEM activities. Our mission is to provide more underserved children the opportunity to experience our programs, develop their own innovative mindset, and benefit from hands-on, problem-based learning, which will boost their interest and confidence in exploring STEM fields.”
Local programs are facilitated and taught by certified local educators. Annually, Camp Invention programs benefit more than 118,000 children and partner with 2,500 schools and districts across the nation. Educators and school districts can partner with Camp Invention by visiting invent.org/camp.

Sara was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the world and was featured on the cover of Forbes Magazine as the youngest self-made female billionaire. Sara Blakely and The Sara Blakely Foundation are on a mission to change the way women see themselves and the way the world sees women. Blakely has invested millions of dollars to elevate women and in 2013, she signed the Giving Pledge, promising to donate half her wealth to philanthropy.

Exploring St George
Living in Las Vegas can really put you into a bubble but this June, we ventured out of state for my birthday and explored St. George. Just 2 hours away and right by Zion, Utah is just beautiful. St. George was known as Dixie and lots of signage still say Dixie. There is even a huge white D marking the mountain landscape. We noticed the change in elevation as we left the valley and more greenary. Outside of the desert, St. George is known for it’s lack of traffic, family friendly things to do and an adorable Town Square and Children’s Museum.

We planned this getaway with other families from Tiny Hikes and the kids were able to explore the caves, caverns and slot canyons. Nature’s playground is full of surprises. The kids heard different sounds, echos and colors of rocks that sparkled at the Golden Hour. This is actually our third time visiting so we were well aware of the store closures on Sundays since this town is mostly Mormon. We enjoyed the family time at Thunder Junction and riding the train around the All Abilities park. I felt so happy to be able to celebrate my birthday with my sister, my aunt and my mom! I felt so loved and like a kid myself again.

There are many fun places to eat and we went got a reservation from Open Table to Wood Ash Rye. This was on Main Street. The menu was incredible and we selected everything we wanted to try and enjoyed it family style. The open kitchen and ambiance we just perfect and the dining room as bustling with excitement. I highly recommend the duck!

If you are looking for an easy getaway, consider St. George! We will definitely be back again to explore more hikes, park, restaurants and Zion National Park!

23% increase crushes previous annual records and inspires dynamic experiences for more visitors
The Orange County Tourism website, orangetourism.org, drew record-breaking traffic over the past year, surpassing 1 million annual visits for the first time.
The surge of website visits represented a 23% increase over 2022’s visits, which set the previous record. The increase was powered by a combination of Orange County’s many assets, County Executive Steven Neuhaus’ Four Seasons Campaign to promote year-round tourism and marketing strategies from the Tourism Department.

Strategies utilized to increase traffic to the website include targeted digital advertising, social media advertising and organic growth, and calendar listings with more eye-catching photographs. The function for creating personal itineraries guides users through a simple process that suggests points of interest, places to eat and anything else the prospective visitor seeks. A highlight is the craft beverage section, which was expanded into a distinct microsite within the larger site, with profiles and videos of the breweries, wineries, distilleries and cideries.
Among the site’s additions are:
- The Taste the Craft Trail Pass
- The Family Fun Trail Pass
- A new travel guide
- A wealth of new videos that include top destinations, craft beverage locations, family fun opportunities and more.
A steady stream of press releases posted to the website, with images, adds another dimension to promoting the county’s assets while maximizing search engine optimization (SEO). Images and landing pages are updated quarterly to showcase the seasons and offer a fresh look. Email sign-ups and travel guide request forms create strong calls to action and user interaction.
“Our strategic and innovative improvements continue to drive visitors to the website,” Dana said. “We invite you to check out orangetourism.org’s many offerings, and of course, to visit Orange County, N.Y., for good times and great memories.”
