National Candy Day is 11/4! Repurpose Your Left-Over Halloween Candy
With Halloween officially over and National Candy Day quickly approaching, I wanted to share a couple of great candy hacks/crafts that can be easily done right at home! These tips are via TheSoul Publishing – an award-winning publishing co. behind one of the top five YouTube channels, 5-Minute Crafts.
- DIY Candy Despenser: If you’ve got some left-over gumballs or M&Ms from Halloween, try making this easy candy dispenser! Take a red Solo cup and an empty mini sized water bottle. Line the upside-down water bottle up with the bottom of the cup, trace a circle and cut it out, creating a hole in the cup. Next, cut out a half circle and slit on the front of the cup, removing a piece of the cup. Using a push pin, place a small circle in the cut-out piece and attach to the cup from the inside. Next, cut out ¼ of a full-sized water bottle and place inside of the cup, acting as a landing for the candy dispenser. Drop your favorite candy into the water bottle and you’re all set!
- Candy Fruit: Using any left-over hard candies and your favorite fruit, you can make a delicious dessert! Simply cut an apple or pear into slices and lay them out event on a baking sheet. Next, unwrap your hard candies and place them into a zipped plastic bag. Smash the candies up using a rolling pin and sprinkle the pieces on top of the sliced fruit. Place into the oven until the candies have melted onto the fruit slices. Allow them to cool and enjoy!

Mummy Jalapeño Poppers
Ingredients:
- 5 jalapeños, halved and seeded
- 3/4 cup cream cheese, room temperature
- 3 slices crispy bacon, crumbled
- 1 Cheddar Folios Cheese Wrap, cut into 1/2″ strips
- Candy eyeballs (found on Amazon)
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese and crumbled bacon.
- Spoon cream cheese and bacon mixture into each jalapeño half and arrange on a parchment or foil-lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Remove from oven and let sit until cool enough to handle.
- One half at a time, carefully wrap jalapeños with cheese strips (1-2 per jalapeño).
- Heat oven to broil and gently place wrapped poppers under broiler for 1 minute.
- Remove from oven and immediately place eyes on each popper. Let cool and serve.
Follow-up with these cute and crunchy Jack-o’-Lantern Marinara Bites that your guests will absolutely love – they’re like mozzarella sticks all in one bite:
Jack-o’-Lantern Marinara Bites
Ingredients:
- 2 to 3 Mozzarella Folios Cheese Wraps
- 1 cup prepared marinara
- *pumpkin cookie cutter
Directions:
- Cut Mozzarella Folios into an even number of pumpkins using a cooking cutter.
- Arrange pumpkin-shaped cheese slices in a single layer on a microwave safe plate and microwave until golden, about 1 minute. Remove and allow to harden.
- Spoon prepared marinara onto half of crisped pumpkins.
- Top each with remaining crisped pumpkins. Serve with more marinara for dipping.
Last, but certainly not least, leave a lasting impression with an Instagram-worthy Spiderweb Pizza that’ll leave your guests wondering where you hid the chef:
Spiderweb Pizza
Ingredients:
- 2 Parmesan Folios Cheese Wraps
- 1/3 cup prepared marinara
- Additional toppings like meat and olives as desired
Directions:
- Preheat broiler. Heat 1 Folios Cheese Wrap in the microwave until crisp and golden, about 1.5 minutes. This will be the crust.
- Using another Folios Cheese Wrap, cut out two unfilled circles with a knife – one the full size of the Folios and one about half that size. Also cut out 6-8 straight strips about half the length of the Folios. These will be your web (optional: add other toppings like a spider-shaped Folios, black olives, pepperonis, etc.).
- Spread prepared sauce on crisped wrap. Then apply meat (or other preferred toppings).
- Top with cheese cutouts arranged like a web.
- Serve as is or broil for 20 seconds to melt the cheese and then serve.

Save Cats from Dying in Laboratories and Help Felines Find Their Forever Homes
National Cat Day, celebrated on Saturday, October 29th, is a day to encourage cat adoption and learn more about ways to improve the lives of cats. A federal bill gaining attention in Congress aims to ensure that felines used in laboratories have a chance to find their forever homes across the country.
More than 18,000 cats – along with 60,000 dogs and 140,000 rabbits – are used in experiments in the United States every year, with many suffering and dying in cruel, unreliable tests. Even when cats (and other animals) survive an experiment, they are often killed and discarded if they are considered no longer useful to the laboratory, when they could instead be released for adoption into loving homes.
Cats are used in many experiments including those involving vision and hearing, sleep patterns, paralysis and the brain, strokes and parasites. Such studies may involve invasive and gruesome procedures including drilling holes in their skulls to implant electrodes, or being intentionally deafened and blinded. Over 5,400 cats are used in experiments known to cause pain and some are purposely performed without pain relieving drugs. Cats may be selected for experiments because they are easy to handle and house, are inexpensive and easy to acquire. Hundreds of cats are held in laboratories but not used in experiments and even these cats may be killed if they are deemed “surplus” to the laboratory.
Now, the Companion Animal Release from Experiments [CARE] Act, championed by Californian Congressman Tony Cárdenas, could ensure that cats, as well as dogs and rabbits, are put up for adoption rather than killed when no longer wanted for experiments in laboratories that receive taxpayer funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The Bill was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives in October 2021 and is currently open for lawmakers to add their names to it in support, to make legislative progress more likely.
Congressman Cárdenas said, “It’s simple: if a research facility uses pets for research, then they must work to find them homes. We experiment on over 200,000 dogs, cats, and rabbits each year. The least we can do is give these living beings a chance at life in a loving home. My bill requires research facilities funded by the NIH to develop adoption policies for those animals. This is part of a larger effort to move away from animal-based testing and research wherever possible and toward more humane and sound scientific research.”
Monica Engebretson, Cruelty Free International’s North America Head of Public Affairs, said, “While we believe that these experiments shouldn’t be happening in the first place, we are pleased that the CARE Act has the potential to save hundreds of animals with a desire to live free from suffering. Organizations across the U.S. are ready to help laboratory survivors find happy endings. Anyone who cares about animals should support the CARE Act.”

“Dreamers International Youth and Children’s Art Exhibition” in US ARTS, San Diego
“Dreamers International Youth and Children’s Art Exhibition” is going to be hosted in US Arts Education Center from October 30th in San Diego. Coordinated by US ARTS, Galley Yoo and New Art Trend.
This exhibition is composed of students from all around Shanghai, China. US Arts Education Center aims to showcase different art styles and influence from other cultures. The Opening ceremony will be on Sunday October 30th 11-2pm. The ceremony will include different art activities and raffle prizes. Snacks and beverages will be provided.
This exhibition will be on display at US ARTS Education Center Sunday, October 30th thru Tuesday, November 15th. Parents and students are welcome to stop by to view the artworks anytime during office hours.
