Event LOVE: Private Dinner @MichaelsOnSimcoe #michaelseoe

***DISCLAIMER*** You’re going to need a bib, a napkin, maybe even a towel before, during and after this, because it’s about to get real tasty around here!!

    MICHAELS ON SIMCOE

We were invited to attend the media launch of Michael’s on Simcoe, a modern Italian Steakhouse that playfully combines the best in contemporary cuisine, located in the heart of the Financial and Entertainment Districts of downtown Toronto . I didn’t understand what they meant when they said that it was Toronto’s best kept secret, but by the time I had a bite of my first appetizer, I knew exactly why!

    MICHAELS ON SIMCOE

They promised us an evening of elegance and I can honestly say that they delivered on that promise and more! The event was supposed to start at 7:30pm, but they decided to spoil us even more and invited select media to a private dinner hosted by Moët & Chandon before the actual dinner! I can’t describe how fast I got dressed just so I could get there already.

    MICHAELS ON SIMCOE

We were greeted with a tall, crisp glass of champagne and then led to the bar area where we were showered (yes that’s what it felt like)… we were showered with all kinds of delicious appetizers and of course more champagne. We hadn’t even sat down at the table and I was already getting full, but I wore a loose dress just so I could taste and savour everything that they had to offer! So now, enough talking. Sit back, relax (don’t forget your bib, if you haven’t started drooling already 🙂 ) and enjoy!

So what are my thoughts on Michael’s On Simcoe? I think I’ve already made it pretty clear that the food was fantastic! If I were to give my overall experience a rating out of 10, I would give them a 10. The wines were perfectly paired throughout our meal, and the staff? The staff took service to a whole new level, they knew the menu and their wines inside out, they were super attentive, friendly without being invasive, and accommodated every single request. Top notch service. Would I recommend it? Well if I have to recommend it after these pictures then I’m not sure you deserve all that goodness! I kid, Of Course you should go. You have to go.

Thank you so much to the Michael’s on Simcoe team for a truly amazing and elegant evening, and to Meg and the EPR team; THANK YOU for always taking such good care of us 🙂 xo

    Cheers!

    Food Tips from @KeriGans

5 Foods That May Contribute to Stress at Work

    1. Foods High in Caffeine – Caffeine intake sometimes carries a negative connotation, but as with many things, moderation is key. Small daily doses of caffeine – try and stick to 16oz. or less – is OK. Black coffee and tea, for example, are not only a lot lower in sugar than most soft and sports drinks; they’re also rich in antioxidants which may help reduce the risk of certain diseases and ultimately be beneficial to overall health. The harm in caffeine comes with its over-consumption. In large amounts, because it’s a powerful stimulant, caffeine can cause anxiety and loss of concentration, in turn leading to loss of productivity and heightened stress on the job. Some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others. If you feel yourself becoming jittery or irritable after multiple caffeinated beverages, it would do best to limit your intake.

    2. Sodium-Rich Foods – Though 24% of the respondents in the “What’s Your Healthy?” study report wanting to avoid unhealthy foods with more regularity, sodium rich fries, chips, and deli meats are still lunchtime favorites. An excess of sodium causes the body to retain fluids, which may cause hypertension. Though research is unclear on whether or not stress alone can result in prolonged high blood pressure, sticking to a diet low in fat and sodium can be best. Small changes, such as ordering a simple grilled chicken sandwich with avocado and lots of veggies on whole wheat bread instead of a huge sub weighed down by cheese, meat and high sodium condiments, may help keep blood pressure down. Of course, other lifestyle changes including regular exercise, adequate sleep, and meditation can also help keep hypertension and stress at bay. If you’re an office-dweller, break up your 9-to-5 with a quick walk around the block if possible, if not, even simple stretches at your desk can be beneficial.

    3. Junk Foods – While it’s fine to indulge your cravings every now and then, if you find yourself making frequent trips to the office vending machine, you may want to re-consider that afternoon bag of candy. While packaged sweets and other quick-fix snacks seem to satisfy cravings, their effect is temporary and typically result in feelings of sluggishness and hunger. Not only do they leave you feeling famished, most junk foods are simple carbohydrates void of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals, the same dietary essentials which assist the body in regulating stress levels. We also know that frequent consumption of high-calorie, high-fat foods can lead to weight gain that can bring a whole slew of health issues – such as, obesity, diabetes and heart disease. So instead of a visit to the vending machine bring a healthy snack to work with you that could keep your body energized, such as a low-fat plain yogurt with berries, raw veggies and hummus, or an apple with natural peanut butter.

    4. Fatty Foods – Research will support that eating a fatty meal may heighten the unhealthy effects of stress on the heart, like raising blood pressure. When we think of fatty foods, pizza, fried chicken and mashed potatoes most likely come to mind first; but we may also be consuming lots of fat in other types of foods we don’t think of. For example, if you are consuming a large amount of 100% whole fat dairy (such as cheese, yogurt, milk) daily you may also need to be concerned. Instead of pouring full-fat cream in your daily cup of joe or drowning your cereal in full-fat milk, try 1% low-fat or nonfat milk for starters or try alternatives like almond or soy milk. It may take awhile to adapt to the new taste, but starting your day with a heart-healthy beverage is worth the switch.

    5. Alcohol – Even if your alcohol intake doesn’t match Don Draper’s on the job, studies show that it’s the light or light-to-moderate drinkers who cause more problems than their heavy drinking counterparts, and the reason is their hangovers. . Hangovers may kill your chance at productivity and subsequently increase your stress. Partaking in a glass of wine or beer at a business lunch also may not benefit you. Though 37% of the respondents in the “What’s Your Healthy?” study report drinking less alcohol than they did five years ago, many of us still imbibe regularly, and sometimes, while in the presence of colleagues. While your intention may be to take the edge off, you may be surprised to learn that your choice of beverage is actually having the opposite effect. While it may lower our inhibitions, reaction time and sense of judgment, research shows that alcohol also stimulates the release of cortisol, also known as the body’s ‘stress hormone.’ When you’re on the clock, stick to sparkling water or another non-alcoholic alternative.

    Best of NYC: Food

I have only been in China for about three days and I’m already getting nostalgic for New York City. New Yorkers may be loud, aggressive, and insane, but you can truly be whoever you want to be in this city.  There really isn’t another place in the world quite like it.

I’m also thinking about so many of the great meals shared with new friends, old friends, and school buddies that I reconnected with. As I think about all of the delicious food and wonderful company I encountered this summer, I feel it’s only right that I share some of my favorite spots in the city for a bite to eat.

    Country-Bacon-with-Onion-RingsSource: Bare Burger

Bare burger has a ton of organic variety… from Bison burgers, to several kinds of veggie options, to sandwiches and wraps. I will definitely be bringing my family here the next time they are in town!

    Source: www.koreanbeacon.com

If you feel like getting some beers and grub in Korea Town, Mad For Chicken, makes delicious chicken marinated in hot & spicy and garlic sauces. You can also order a beer tower. Seriously people, it’s a tower of beer that lights up in different colors.

    pbjThai-Iced-CoffeeSource: Oddfellows NYC

My favorite new ice cream place is a 1950’s themed parlor in Williamsburg (near the water where they have The Brooklyn Flea) called Oddfellows. I would go back and get their awesome flavors like Thai Iced Tea and PB&J (see picture above).  The PB&J is made by freezing the condiments with liquid nitrogen to keep them separate from the vanilla base. At Sundaes and Cones in Manhattan, the taro, green tea, and guava ice-creams are must tries! GROM has the best gelato in the city. Paris Baguette in K-Town has a fantastic green tea shaved ice with toppings for days.

    xianporkxian1Source: Xian Famous Foods

Xian Famous Foods is the place to go for inexpensive spicy noodles and their insane pork buns. Ohmygod their pork buns are just bursting with flavor.

For cheap, tasty Vietnamese fare, I would head down to Nha Trang in Chinatown and order their shrimp summer rolls, pork chop, and chicken pho.

I have not found a place with more choices and toppings than Kung Fu Tea. I love that you can adjust the amount of sugar you want in your boba. I’m obsessed with their kung fu green milk tea and taro milk tea. For a sit down place, I always go to the Teahouse from Hong Kong, St. Alps.

What are your favorite places to eat in the city?

Stay tuned for more posts about where to drink, exercise, and shop!

    @Editor-Showcase Cooking & Entertaining Event

Last week I went to an Editor Showcase Cooking & Entertaining event at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. There, 29 brands gathered to provide editors with information and samples of their products. We also got great ideas for entertaining, which is perfect for the soon approaching holidays.

I discovered a few new products, learned new uses for familiar products, and got to try a couple products I’ve always passed by on the grocery shelves, but have never bought. I came home with two giant bags of samples, which I will be reviewing over the next few months and telling you all about!

In the meanwhile, I wanted to give you a glimpse of what’s to come!

We all know Sweet’N Low. Did you know this zero calorie sweetener can be used to make “skinny” mixed cocktails?

Ninja puts a new spin on the crock pot, with a multi-use cooking appliance that can even be used to bake!

Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, which will be coming soon to uptown NYC, offers a line of scrumptious spring rolls, but we’re not talking your typical Chinese restaurant find. Flavors like macaroni & cheese, Reuben, and buffalo chicken are super tasty.

Hamilton Beach has really stepped it up with their funky line of animal print crock pots. And blending is taken to the next level with their professional-grade blender pictured on the left (which retails for about $800).

Satori Cheese offers amazing, delicious cheeses, including my favorite: Cognac BellaVitano, which is “steeped in Rémy Martin Cognac for 7 to 10 intoxicating days.”

Lékué, pronounced Lee-Kway, the Spanish manufacturer of creative, colorful, kitchen products, has introduced a collection of more than 40 products designed for healthy, low-fat cooking, baking, and food storage.

With vines dating back more than 2,000 years, the Rhône Valley is the second largest Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée in France with more than 6,000 grape growers, covering 188,700 acres and delivering more than 404 million bottles of wine per year. Love the rose they had!

I love olives and olive oil is the only oil I cook with, so I was very happy to see International Olive Council’s Add Some Life campaign, which strives to inspire consumers about the taste, versatility, nutritional benefits and importance of making olives and olive oil staples in their daily lives.

Hurricane or another natural disaster approaching? Camping trip ahead? Just want to be prepared for the Apocalypse? eFoodsDirect  is a gourmet storable food company whose mission is to help all American families have healthy, easy-to-fix, affordable, delicious storable food insurance. These space-food-sealed meals have a shelf live of 25 years, tastes great, and are all natural.

If you don’t know about stock, you don’t know about a great cooking secret. Use it instead of water when cooking veggies for extra flavor and add it to rice when boiling. Knorr now has a reduced sodium version so you can cut down on the salt.

Coffee drinkers: Did you know Green Mountain Coffee has more than 100 high-quality, 100% Arabica varieties and the largest selection of Fair Trade Certified coffees in the country? Now you do.

What’s better than comfort food? How about low-calorie comfort food you can have straight from your microwave in a few minutes, thanks to Healthy Choice’s new Baked Entrées line.

We’ve all seen those commercials where CRL cleans just about everything in its path. These products are good for any host/hostess who is serious about solving tough cleaning problems.

For vegans, or anyone who wants to skip the dairy, Earth Balance produces a line of delicious buttery spreads, shortenings, nut butters, soymilk, soy nog, coconut spread and alternative mayo. I tried the Creamy Coconut nut butter and washed it down with the Organic Soy Milk. Yum!

Make-at-home fondue? Need I say more? Emmi Roth also makes and variety of specialty other artisan cheeses and premium fresh dairy products.

Chavrie is an all-natural, fresh goat cheese based on a classic French recipe and created from the milk of local Amish farmers in the farmlands of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A dinner party wouldn’t be complete without a nice cup of coffee (to soak up the wine!). Eight O’Clock Coffee brings over 150 years of expertise to their full line of gourmet coffee varieties

Mmm, avacado! Avocados from Mexico are creamy and delicious and always in season for cooking and entertaining.

Charmane Skillen began selling gourmet sea and mineral salts at area farmers markets. S.A.L.T. not only described her product, it was a symbol of her motivation–her four beautiful daughters, Sydney, Alexis, Lauren and Taylor.

You know Sugar in the Raw–the brown sugar packets a Starbucks? Well, did you know In the Raw also makes, zero-calorie Stevia In The Raw,  organic Agave In The Raw, and Monk Fruit In The Raw, a zero-calorie sweetener made from fruit?

Athens Foods is the world’s largest producer of fillo dough and fillo products, including convenient, fully baked Mini Fillo Shells that you can use to make tasty bites like this.
